Open Letter to the Media

Open Letter to the Australian Media regarding the Mental Health System

Tell Us Your Story

About Us

We, a group of people with first hand experience of the mental health system, are composing an open letter to the media to express our concerns about the lack of media coverage of the system, and to draw the attention of civil rights organisations to the systemic discrimination, and human rights abuses that we have witnessed and experienced. Abuse, corruption and exploitation have been covered up, while victims and critics of the system have been silenced and marginalised.

We are asking for personal experiences of the mental health system, input towards the letter, and signatures to strengthen our case.

"... the discriminatory nature of forced psychiatric interventions, when committed against persons with psychosocial disabilities, satisfies both intent and purpose under the article 1 of the convention against torture, not withstanding claims of "good intentions" by medical professionals"

- Jaun Mendez, Report of the special rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment or punishment
